Basic Expat Training Manaul

The Basic Expat Training Manual is an eBook written by the author of this website. It is based on his Philippines experiences and is intended to help those wishing to relocate to the Philippines or those that have recently arrived. However, quite a few old timers have indicated that The Manual was valuable for them as well. It is available only for download to read on your PC using Adobe Reader which is a free program. You can buy the manual with this LINK

Basic BB Code Usage

BBCode was devised to provide a safer, easier and more limited way of allowing users to format their messages. Previously, many message boards allowed the users to include HTML formatting, a side effect of which was that malformed HTML could disrupt the page's layout, or HTML could be used to run JavaScript leading to XSS attacks.

The following is a few of the BB Code Examples available.

[b]bolded text[/b]

[i]italicized text[/i]

[u]underlined text[/u]

[s]strikethrough text[/s]

[size=15]Large Text[/size]

Firefox has a plugin that will help you with your BBcode entry. For Firefox you can get it here.

Picture Size and Compression

The more pictures the better. For that reason I've increased the total size of uploaded pictures a lot for groups CEX certified and above.

I've also lowered the size each picture can be. I had the total size pretty darn generous. Some of you managed to meet that quota fast.

So I increased the total size of all uploads but lowered the size of attachments to 2048 per file. That's still 20 times the size it should be, so I will cut that in half later. I often upload pictures of 800x600 and larger and keep them below 100k. 100k is the recommended file size.

There are tools that allow you to compress your pictures. I usually do it with Lightroom or Photoshop. If you have photoshop you can do it by clicking file and then export for web device. Pictures are usually saved for printing. This is much higher quality that can be displayed on ANY monitor. So anything above that quality setting is a waste. That increases load time on pages. It is important to keep load time low. I spend a lot of money to keep load times low.

If you don't have Photoshop or Light Room you can still do it by using a tool provided by Yahoo. You can find that tool here.
