Someone asked me if I thought I was freer in the Philippines than the USA. When you try to compare the two countries you are always going to run into problems. Even how free you are in the Philippines is affected by where you live. You'll be more free in most mountain towns and less free in Davao and Manila.

I'm not sure about the answer and that is mostly because of our lack of free speech in the Philippines. The Philippines does not pass as many laws to prevent you from doing stupid things that might harm yourself. That too seems to be changing a little though. From what I can tell, the amount of evidence to reach the burden of "reasonable cause" is higher here and police have more restrictions on who and how they investigate people. On the other hand, entrapment is a common way of busting people and is completely legal in the Philippines. I'm not really sure it shouldn't be in the USA.

I wrote an article about all of this on the blog: Freedom in the Philippines

Some say they like a corrupt system as long as they can afford to buy they way through it. :) That is very honest. I saw someone that wrote that on a Philippines website dedicated to bikini bars. Talking about a lot of jaded men with the wrong idea of what the Philippines is like. The bikini bars will certainly do that for you.
The son of the mayor of Talisay has been causing trouble for a while. I know he was in trouble a year or so ago. Don't know if he has been in jail that whole time.
He broke out of jail recently. Cebu now considers him "public enemy number 1" I guess power doesn't always get you out of trouble here.

This is a question that all of that live here get often. I usually get this question and email from people I don't know and I don't answer it. If I do answer it, I say visit the website and the forum. Some questions are better asked in public. I just can't answer all of the questions I get.

I wrote an article on the cost of living the Philippines today on my new blog. If you already live here, you know the answer. I tried to convey that not everyone has the same experience as I do. People like to live different ways. That's certainly a good thing. :)

If you have any thoughts, I hope you'll leave a comment on the blog or here. Go ahead, be wrong and disagree with me. Their ain't nothing humble about my opinion. LOL I've never seen a humble opinion with someone includes IMHO. :)

Here are a few to start.
This is Jessie at Jollibee's in Bogo City. My jokes have finally gotten old. Don't remember being able to make her laugh like this. I don't remember what I said. It must have been good

After recently reading about the Filipina in the US being killed in the back of a limo due to fire, it made me realize just how dangerous many of the taxis in Cebu City are with doors that do not open from the inside and windows that just do not open at all. I carry a decent size knife so I can break a window if necessary but I doubt many others do. We have been to other parts of the Philippines and for the most part taxis are newer and in good repair when compared to the taxis in Cebu City, anyone know who to complain to because one day it might cost someone their life if one were to catch fire and the passengers were unable to get out?

What a beautiful hotel. The lobby is magnificent. If you have not been there then it is worth walking over from SM Cebu City to just look at the lobby and possibly have a drink but be prepared to pay big for drinks, four of us had one drink each and it was just about p1000. I sure would not want their electric bill just to cool that lobby, no wonder it can cost p9000 a night and up. Their buffet is pretty neat too, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday it is half price, so a much better deal IMHO.

I find the Philippines to be a good place for gay people since it is most often right out in the open and most people I have met do not treat gays any different than they treat non gays (too bad that could not be so worldwide), so possibly it is time for same sex marriages to be legal. What do you think about it and where might it lead?

I posted an article about the US dollar to Philippine peso rate of exchange. I'm sure that most of you won't agree with me but I can't live with it. I'm not joining the USA is doomed crowed. I remember a couple of years ago someone posted a link to a guy selling a newsletter for several hundred dollars a year.
It was on another board.

I was shocked then that so many people bought into what he was saying in his marketing video. He predicting the US dollar would collapse completely by the end of that year. I think people just like doom and gloom or something. I don't know.

Anyway, here's the link, feel free to disagree either on the site or here.

The low dollar has really cut into my life style, no doubt about that. It is costing me about P10,000 a month or more than $200. :(
